The most offensive Halloween costumes of all time<\/p><\/div> You\u2019d have to have your head in the sand, or somewhere, in order not to have noticed Halloween is upon us. You may remember when we had some interesting costumes in stock, see here<\/a>, which was similar to some stock that the supermarkets had. The sale of mental health patient costumes caused a bit of a stink a few years ago, after an outcry by various celebrities and consumers, and Asda, for one, felt compelled to donate \u00a325,000 to MIND (the mental health charity that does amazing work) as an apology for its poor taste. <\/p>\n

\"The

The banned supermarket costumes<\/p><\/div>The fancy dress costumes that appeared to trivialise mental health issues included one that was comprised of a ragged, blood-spattered straitjacket – and pictured worn by someone covered in blood and brandishing a machete and was called ‘Psycho Ward’, and another that was – a bright orange jumpsuit that had the word ‘Committed’ emblazoned on the reverse.<\/p>\n

There was a Twitter <\/strong>storm and former footballer Stan Collymore, who has battled depression himself, tweeted ‘Dear ASDA, nice stereotype of ‘Mental patients’. Something you’d expect from the \u00a3\u00a3\u00a3. A f***ing joke.\u2019<\/em> He pointed out that many people are frightened of the stigma, and hurt themselves, sometimes fatally. Asda was forced to apologise and withdraw the product.<\/p>\n

Halloween does offer a great opportunity to dress up and party, but you do have to be careful that you don\u2019t sale too close to the wind and dress in something that is potentially offensive to other people. You can accuse us of being too PC if you like, but we\u2019ve compiled a list of costumes we recommend you avoid. What are the most offensive Halloween costumes of all time? <\/p>\n

\"Malaysian

Malaysian Airlines Flight Crew<\/p><\/div>Avoid topical or long-remembered tragedies<\/strong>. Who can forget about the controversy of the students who dressed as the Twin Towers? I\u2019ve also seen one for \u2018Malaysian Airlines Flight Crew\u2019.<\/p>\n

\"Seriously?

Seriously? Such an uncool idea for Halloween.<\/p><\/div>Anything blackface<\/strong>. Just 12 months ago, I would have assumed that nobody in Britain would paint their face for Halloween. Now in the light of Brexit, panic about immigration and child refugees, I\u2019m not so sure. Blacking your face is offensive and racist. It\u2019s not funny, it\u2019s not cool. Blackface is easily one of the most offensive Halloween costumes of all time.<\/p>\n

Anything from a native or indigenous culture<\/strong>. By this we mean not dressing as a native American Indian, a Dashiki, a Geisha, a Maori, a Scot (if you\u2019re not) etc. Indigenous dress, such as tribal wear or kilts, they\u2019re not costumes, they are part of a culture and rich heritage. You may think it looks great, the Glaswegian behind you, may not.<\/p>\n

\"Beatiful

Beatiful when well done, but …<\/p><\/div>Sugar skull<\/strong>. This is an interesting one as sugar skull make-up is currently pretty fashionable. Calavera, otherwise known as sugar skull makeup, is associated with D\u00eda de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. You\u2019ve seen Spectre<\/em><\/strong>, right? The Mexican spiritual holiday is a celebration of loved ones who have passed away, so you need to be careful what you\u2019re messing with.<\/p>\n

\"Just

Just NO!<\/p><\/div>Anything Arabian<\/strong>. We often use Arab, and Arabian as catch-all terms which dismisses cultural differences between Middle Eastern people. Feelings are running high at the moment, and Islamophobia is real. You may think your costumes is funny, someone with direct experience of fundamentalism and terrorism will not. Alternatively, you may just be guilty of discrimination, racism or bad taste. Don\u2019t do it.<\/p>\n

\"Sexy

Sexy eating disorder … *groan*<\/p><\/div>“Anna Rexia”<\/strong> A Halloween costume depicting an eating disorder. Ouch.<\/p>\n

\"The

The Dentist and Cecil<\/p><\/div>Hunter\/Animal costumes<\/strong>. There have been a few hunter\/animal costumes around recently. You know, the kind that depict a dentist as a hunter with a lion trophy. Or you can get a Cecil the Lion costume. There\u2019s also been a “Sexy Harambe” costume (he was the gorilla involved when the child fell into his enclosure. Harambe was shot and killed, and this caused controversy). It\u2019s not cute, it\u2019s not sexy, it\u2019s not fun.<\/p>\n

\"Zombie

Zombie Amy Winehouse? Too soon?<\/p><\/div>I read somewhere that the most offensive Halloween costume would be a zombie version of a recently deceased celebrity, and I\u2019ll buy that to a certain extent. How soon is too soon to do a Michael Jackson Thriller Zombie Halloween costume? Maybe too soon for David Bowie or Severus Snape perhaps?<\/p>\n

\"Just

Just the funniest picture I saw all weekend \ud83d\ude42<\/p><\/div>Donald Trump<\/strong>. Trump – quite possible the most offensive Halloween costumes of all time. Ah \u2026.. what the hell. Go for it.<\/p>\n

This Halloween, why not try to be a little more creative and original? Steer clear of the disturbing Halloween costumes, especially racially or culturally insensitive ones, or those that are topical and tragic.<\/p>\n

\"I

I can’t help giggling at this …<\/p><\/div>And I have to say that one of my personal favourites is an inflatable penis, which for some reason I don\u2019t find offensive at all. I guess it\u2019s all in the eye of the beholder, but of course you have to ask how offensive it would be if you turned up as a vagina.<\/p>\n
