Since then he\u2019s put his ideas down in print so I thought I would pick some of those out for you. Sharing is caring after all.<\/p>\n<p>Charlie has spent over six years in eCommerce having worked initially in the wholesale sector.  With the sort of knowledge he gained through working in Wholesale he was well capable of starting up a number of eCommerce businesses for his friends and family and also for himself. He now works for <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linnworks.com\/\">Linnworks<\/a> <\/strong><\/em>which is a multichannel automation software package so he still works with online sellers every day and he still runs his own eCommerce businesses. He\u2019s learned quite a few lessons over the years. <\/p>\n<p>Here are some of those lessons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\t\u2018More Time Spent, Less Money Made\u2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Online sellers have the potential to be the real entrepreneurs of the future, the only thing required &#8211; is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropshiplifestyle.com\/\">start an internet company<\/a>. They want to make money, are hungry for it, and they want to run their business in a smart way. Charlie says, he \u201c<em>watched as the old guard that refused to embrace online selling were slowly swept away with the recession<\/em>\u201d. <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1390\" style=\"width: 234px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholesaleclearance.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Charlie4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholesaleclearance.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Charlie4.jpg\" alt=\"Check out order management solutions affordable for you\" width=\"224\" height=\"224\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wholesaleclearance.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Charlie4.jpg 224w, https:\/\/www.wholesaleclearance.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Charlie4-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1390\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Check out order management solutions affordable for you<\/p><\/div>Charlie notes that the smartest sellers always list everything the supplier has in stock.<\/p>\n<p>These smart sellers will request a \u2018Live\/Active\u2019 stock list on a daily basis and list everything Charlie held. They were the ones who made the most sales and were always able to meet the Minimum Order Quantities (MOQ) that were required \u2013 resulting in the cheaper rates offered to buyers for purchasing more at once. <\/p>\n<p>These <strong>Drop Ship Strategies <\/strong>are particularly smart says Charlie<\/p>\n<p>There are the sellers who \u2018Work Smarter not Harder\u2019 and while Charlie\u2019s business picked, packed and despatched all of their orders for them, those innovative sellers were out playing golf \u2013 and living off their margins. <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1388\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholesaleclearance.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Charlie-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholesaleclearance.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Charlie-3.png\" alt=\"Make yourself a KNOWN customer\" width=\"240\" height=\"142\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1388\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Make yourself a KNOWN customer<\/p><\/div><strong>2.\tMake yourself known and phone for the best deal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re one of those people who simply email for discounts, you\u2019re more than likely going to receive an automated response copied from a Microsoft Word document.<br \/>\nOn the other hand, if you strive to make yourself a \u2018known customer\u2019 and you\u2019re able to make a good deal, approach your supplier with a decent proposition. Charlie says, \u201cDon\u2019t ask for a discount without making the sales, and definitely don\u2019t ask via email!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Remember it is human nature for people to hate saying no \u2013 but it\u2019s much easier to say no on an email than it is to do it over the phone. Charlie acknowledges that, \u201cDealing <em>with someone by email is impersonal, and a refusal carries less weight emotionally<\/em>\u201d so put on your big boy or girl pants and get in touch personally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\tManage your stock<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re selling across a number of different marketplaces it is easy to forget the mantra that is:  \u2018<strong>More Time Spent, Less Money Made\u2019<\/strong>. The thing is keeping track of your inventory becomes increasingly difficult the more stock you have and the more marketplaces you sell on. Charlie was working not just with eBay and Amazon but also Allegro and Mercado livre. He notes that his \u201cinability <em>to keep stock of what we were selling made us prone to expensive mistakes\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Charlie and his business came across an order management system (one he would later work for) that allowed the Sales and Marketing team to really concentrate on their role.  The order management system allowed Charlie to centralise both stock and orders in one place, with orders automatically deducted from the correct stock figure from the relevant SKU.<\/p>\n<p>This further allowed Charlie and his company to improve their listing optimisation by localising listings for international buyers and go on to sell products directly to B2B clients, including large European and American corporations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.\tKey factors in Charlie\u2019s success:<\/p>\n<p>If you can sell B2C, why not sell B2B?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He started to contact businesses directly and began to sell to B2B customers in bulk, moving those sales away from the Online Marketplaces.<\/p>\n<p>Of course as more sales came in, you gain in confidence and are more willing to approach other larger companies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sell internationally<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Translate your listings and sell online internationally. Let\u2019s face it the UK has a population of around 63 million, yet Germany has a population of nearly 82 million, France 65 million, Italy 60 million and Spain 47 million. That\u2019s just the tip of the iceberg. Just by selling in those countries you will quadruple your target audience. And then if you go on to target US, Brazil, Canada and Japan imagine what that will do for your sales!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Look at your order management system<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Charlie says, when \u201c<em>keeping up to date with accurate stock levels and changing them on your accounts becomes a full time job &#8230; Don\u2019t let it bog you down, use software to do that for you.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1391\" style=\"width: 292px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholesaleclearance.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/charlie5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholesaleclearance.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/charlie5.png\" alt=\"Simple shoelace solutions\" width=\"282\" height=\"179\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1391\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1391\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Simple shoelace solutions<\/p><\/div><strong>Optimize your search terms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tailor each individual listing so that it is targeted with a particular title, brand or style \u2013 this effectively allows you to target more keywords. Charlie gives a great shoelace example as follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example 1<\/strong>. White sport shoe laces for Nike trainers<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example 2.<\/strong> White sport shoe laces for Adidas trainers<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bring repeat customers back to your site<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you can convert customers to move from the marketplace to your own website you\u2019re onto a good thing. Charlie says, \u201c<em>Direct sales have so many benefits, they are easier to manage and the amount of money you save from not having to pay marketplace fees makes the cost of maintaining your own site worthwhile<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Charlie utilised the customer information from online sales, and then created email marketing campaigns that explained clearly to the customer the benefits they would receive by purchasing from his site directly. Build on their trust.
